Dr. Wayne Halstrom: A Legacy of Innovation in Dental Sleep Medicine

In 1960, Wayne Halstrom graduated from the University of Alberta’s Dental School, beginning what would become a groundbreaking career in both dentistry and sleep medicine. For nearly three decades, he practiced as a respected dentist — until a personal diagnosis in 1989 changed the course of his life and profession. When Dr. Halstrom was diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea, he saw firsthand the limitations of existing treatments and became determined to find a better solution.

That determination led to innovation. In 1993, Dr. Halstrom was granted patents for The Silencer, an oral appliance designed to treat snoring and sleep apnea. Three years later, in 1996, the first research on The Silencer was published, cementing its role as a scientifically validated treatment and opening new pathways in dental sleep medicine.

The gift of silence!

Dr. Halstrom’s leadership in dentistry grew alongside his clinical accomplishments. In 2003, he was elected President of the British Columbia Dental Association, and in 2006, he went on to serve as President of the Canadian Dental Association—one of the highest honors in his profession.

By 2005, more than 10,000 patients had been successfully treated using The Silencer, reflecting both its efficacy and Dr. Halstrom’s dedication to improving patient lives. His clinical network expanded in 2009 with the establishment of Dr. Halstrom Sleep Apnea & Snoring Clinics across British Columbia. That same year, his commitment to education and research was recognized with his appointment as Adjunct Professor of Respiratory Therapy in the Faculty of Science – Sleep Program at Thompson Rivers University.

In 2010, Dr. Halstrom opened a new flagship Vancouver Clinic and launched the Vancouver Institute of Sleep Medicine, setting a new standard for interdisciplinary care in sleep health. Since then, his network of clinics has continued to grow across British Columbia, helping countless individuals reclaim healthy, restful sleep.

From his early days as a dentist to his pioneering work in sleep medicine, Dr. Wayne Halstrom’s career stands as a testament to innovation, compassion, and leadership in improving quality of life for patients across Canada and beyond.
